Administrative Support Technology, AAS (298)

Purpose

The Administrative Support Technology (AST) Associate Degree is designed to prepare individuals for employment in a variety of office and administrative support roles and to enhance the skills of individuals currently working in office settings. The program provides practical, career-ready instruction in administrative procedures, business communication, records and information management, and professional software applications needed for effective job performance. In addition, the program supports preparation for industry-recognized credentials such as Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) and Certified Administrative Professional (CAP).

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will be able to:

1. Written Communication: Students will produce clear, professional written communications for workplace use by applying appropriate tone, grammar, formatting, and document design. Students will compose and format common business messages and documents-including emails, memos, routine and goodwill letters, persuasive messages, negative messages, informational reports, proposals, and formal reports-using current office productivity tools.

2. Scientific Reasoning: Students will use computerized tools to collect, organize, analyze, and present data to support workplace decision-making. Students will demonstrate proficiency in creating accurate reports and summaries using appropriate methods such as spreadsheets, charts, tables, formulas, and basic data validation to communicate findings effectively.

3. Critical Thinking: Students will apply critical thinking to workplace tasks by selecting, analyzing, interpreting, and evaluating information from a variety of sources to reach logical conclusions and make appropriate recommendations.

4. Quantitative Reasoning: Students will interpret and explain quantitative information presented in tables, charts, graphs, and diagrams, and use that information to support workplace decisions and communications.

5. Information Literacy: Students will recognize when information is needed and will locate, evaluate, and use information effectively and ethically by applying appropriate search strategies, assessing credibility and relevance, and properly incorporating information into workplace documents and reports.

 

Employment Opportunities

Administrative Support Technology graduates are prepared for a variety of office and administrative support roles in business, education, healthcare, government, and nonprofit settings. Employers seek professionals who demonstrate proficiency with office software and digital tools, effective written and verbal communication, strong organizational skills, customer service, and the ability to apply critical thinking and sound judgment in a fast-paced environment. Employment opportunities may include administrative assistant, executive assistant, receptionist, office coordinator, customer service representative, word processing/document specialist, and office technician, with opportunities available locally, regionally, and nationally.

Program Requirements

An academic advisor will review your current preparation in English and mathematics and help you select any recommended preparatory coursework. This guidance is intended to ensure you have the foundational skills needed for success in the Administrative Support Technology program.
